С Hовым годом

Happy New Year

What, 2004 is already history? Well, cuz the song is good and the dude in black shirt and jeans is hot, I don't care.
Hotties over facts.

Anyway, there were played interesting games last night. Too bad I was busy with having nightmares about my crappy job so I didn't see any of those.

Washington 4 - Buffalo 2
  • Bäckström made Swedish reporters happy with 1 goal and 1 assists
  • Kozlov 0+2
  • Afinogenov... didn't play?? Scheisse

Atlanta 3 - Toronto 4 (OT)
  • Huge surprise, Atlanta lost...
  • But hey, they got a point!
  • Sundin obviously forgot his razor in Toronto, so could someone please be nice enough to bring it to him?

Boston 5 - Pittsburgh 2
  • Chara 1+1, +1
  • Crosby 0+1, -1
  • Sadly, Malkin didn't get his game going either, 0+0, -2. Ouch..

WJHC

Russia 8 - Slovakia 1

Czech 6 - Germany 0

Finland 5 - Latvia 1

USA 12 - Kazakhstan 0

The most bad-ass sport in the world

No, not hockey. Nor boxing. Though I still wouldn't shoot my mouth off to Klitschko... Well, anyway it's ski jumping.

Why? Because we all could play hockey. I for one probably wouldn't be that good at it, but I could skate Bambi style through the ice hoping not to stumble over my own stick... or breaking my wrist. Again.
We all could try boxing. But would you climb to construction like that?

And then come down flying with pair of skiis? I know, I wouldn't. In fact I would rather play Russian rulet. You know, it's more safety. And it's nicer to shoot one's brain off than broke all your bones when landing upside down...

Besides World Junior Hockey Championships, there is a lot of other things going on in the world of sport. Like annual Four Hill Tournament (Vierschanzentournee), a very respected tournament which is also part of ski jumping World Cup. It's held between December 30 and January 6, it includes four events and the winner is who ever gets more points combined. Which means one must be successfull in all four competition to win. Many has try, many has been close, only the strongest have won.

Hey, a dazzling # 28 in team Russia

No, I'm not talking about Semin. I'm talking about Nikita Filatov, a 18 year old Blue Jackets prospect who is playing in WJC. He and his teammates are showing that their skills are on the level Finnish players can only dream about. I truly believe that Russia U20 team could play against team Russia and other national teams with success. I'm not saying they would win those games, I'm saying that when playing their best hockey, it's breathtaking to watch and deathly effective.

I know that Russia is huge country with millions of people, but how they can produce such a skilled players year after year is still mystery to me. There are a lot of people in USA too, but USA doesn't have players like Ovechkin, Semin, Kovalchuk, Malkin, Filatov, Fedorov...etc. And the thing is that it's mostly pure natural talent rather than result of strict team practising.

Maybe they practise more as a kid on their backyards or on frozen lake, maybe they are just so much better. But as long as they keep playing like that, I'll enjoy watching great hockey and wish Finland could play on the same level as a team, not just few players.

Like leaves fall down in autumn, so goes the glory of Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto - Washington

Leafs will visit tonight in Washington. While Capitals have suffered (and still suffer) from injuries, Leafs battle with other kind of problem: lack of seriously taken offense. Their #1 scorer is Nik Antropov with respectful 13 goals in 35 games.

Capitals are second in East, Leafs behind Florida. Capitals have Ovechkin, Kozlov, Bäckström, Semin, Fedorov... etc., while Leafs have Antropov, Kaberle aaand... oh yeah, Stajan with his 30 points.

No team in blue/white can win. Just ask Finland national team.

DIGGILOO DIGGILEY

Boston - Atlanta

#1 vs #14... There is no way Boston won't win this game, but please don't be too cruel to poor lil' Thrashs.

World Junior Championship

Russia - Finland
Kazakhstan - Canada
Sweden - Slovakia
USA - Czech

Christmas traditions from Gävle

Every year in Gävle, Sweden a 13 metres high straw buck is raised in Slottstorget in December. Tradition that began over 40 years ago.

During the time, it has become a tradition to try to burn the buck. Usually, it has been burnt down before Christmas. For couple years the straws were made "nonflammable" but this year the buck was left with no protection but fire extinguisher at its feet.

At 4 am (local time) on Saturday the buck was set on fire and it destroyed in few minutes. The city of Gävle will pay for the tip which helps to get on the track of this hardened criminal.

Is this the way to Russia

Things that happened while I was dreaming of Smash.... Seriously, I live in Finland, it was a Russian band and still it would be easier to score Ovechkin's latest goal 10 times in a row than find their CDs here. Life sucks. Really, really sucks.

Anyway, back to hockey. Things that happened last night
  • Capitals won 2-3 and Afinogenov scored. So did Ovechkin. And Kozlov:) Or Kozl if you work in HockeyExpressen.se...
  • Bryan Little and Slava Kozlov remembered that they are hockey players, Little scored a hat trick and Kozlov had 4 assists. Too bad that rest of the Thrash didn't and they lost 5-4 to Hurricanes.
  • Pens beat Devils 1-0. Really shame that Satan didn't score that goal...

Other things
  • Surprisingly, Finland lost to Sweden 1-3
  • Russia kicked Latvia's ass 1-4. Goncharov scored
  • Canada humiliated Czech's entire hockey culture with 8-1 victory. I blame Finnish zebras. 2 goals for Tavares.
  • USA managed to figure out how to play hockey and stunned Germany 2-8.

Just give the damn cup to Canada...

Ladies and gentlemen, the most important hockey event of the year is finally here. Today will be played the first game of... World Junior Championship.

This is a hockey tournament which includes a lot of players younger than me, so I avoid to watch the games. Which won't be that hard since they are played in the middle of night... Anyway, it makes me feel old, Finland still sucks and Canada has won it something like 100 years in a row.

Хоккейнoe время

Dashing through the ice
In a one man open show
O'er the rink we go
Laughing all the way
Player of the day
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to laugh and release
A dazzling shot tonight

Okey, enough with ruining old Christmas songs. But after few horrible hockey-less day, it's time to drop the puck.

Sabres - Capitals

Season so far
  • Buffalo 16-13-5, 37 points. 3rd in Northeast, 8th in East
  • Capitals 21-11-3, 45 points. 1st in Southeast, 3rd in East
Players to watch

Buffalo
  • Thomas Vanek (24+6), has currently more goals than Ovechkin.
  • Maxim Afinogenov (1+9), has currently less points than Teppo Numminen (1+11). Has potential to score. A lot.
  • Ryan Miller (14-9-4). Yo mama is so ugly, she has to wear goalie mask when she walks on the streets.
Washington
  • Alex Ovechkin (22+24). Just give him the puck and relax.
  • Nicklas Bäckström (10+27). Hur kommer jag till flygplatsen?
  • Alexander Semin (14+18), probably not playing, but has scored as many goals in 21 games as Crosby in 34.
  • Varlamov (2-0-0), bring him back.

Other Games

Canes - Thrash
  • Carolina 16-14-5. 2nd in Southeast, 9th in East
  • Atlanta 12-18-4. 4th Southeast, 13th in East
  • Thrashers will remember that they indeed are hockey players and win

Penguins - Devils
  • Penguins 18-12-4. 4th in Atlantic, 7th in East
  • Devils 19-10-3. 3rd in Atlantic, 6th in East
  • Penguins had better win, because the loss to Tampa was humiliating. And no team with Satan humiliate themselves.

Capitals vs Swedish hoover

Well rested Capitals (last game on Thursday...) will face New York Rangers (the less likeable team in NY).

Fire power

Capitals: Even without Semin and Fedorov, Caps still have Ovechkin, Bäckström, Kozlov, Nylander etc.
Rangers: Zherdev, Näslund, Sundin... No wait, he signed with Canucks

Defense

Capitals: Green, Alzner
Rangers: The third Staal

Hoovers

Capitals: Theodore and Johnson weren't really playing on the level they should play in last game, which didn't happen. Can I get Varlamov back? Please??
Rangers: While Capitals have a tandem in the net, Rangers is Lundqvist's team. Well, at least if he doesn't bench himself... I really, really, really hate him so I would love to give Caps the advantage here, but I can't.

Result

Caps 2 - Rangers 1

Forsberg to Rangers

Since Sundin finally made the decision and goes to Vancouver, it's time to start Forsberg derby. And Rangers are already in, since Näslund is trying to talk him into signing with them. Oren Koules is searching his cheque book...

The battle between two hopeless team

The more likeable team in Nyw York, the Islanders, will host Atlanta. If Kovalchuk remembers to score, Atlanta's defensemen defense and the goalie to make saves, Atlanta should win this one.

A Swedish goodbye?

Rumors about trading Nylander have been around for so long it's getting pretty old. But when you see an (Swedish) artice about him being dissatisfied with Capitals, you take a timeout from what you were doing and read it.

From HockeyEpressen

Michael Nylander starts to be tired with Capitals

Michael Nylander is dissatisfied with being (in?) Washington Capitals. So dissatisfied he doesn't shut out moving.
- Body feels good, but I get too little ice time, says Nylander.

Michael Nylander had six points in first four games. But lately it has been difficult for the Swedish, only two points in last ten games.

Comes to nowhere

- He works hard but comes to nowhere. I understand it's hard for him, who is used to score lots of goals, says head coach Bruce Boudreau to HockeyExpressen.se

Will you stay if it continues like this, Mikael?

That is an important (not the word he used in the interview, but it should be close enough) question. I want to be able to play with the same capacity I had earlier and I want to have prerequisites for being successful in doing that.

He really doesn't sound that happy, does he?

This weekend so did not happen...

I thought that having a flu, being on a very rolling board in a cabin right above the night club was the worst this weekend could happen... Damn, I wish I bought more Breezers.

Anyway, Stockholm is a great city with lot of things to do/see. The weather was good and everyone who ever visits in Sweden (Stockholm) should go to Skansen. It's the world's first outdoor museum and unlike many might thought, it's the most popular tourist destination in Sweden, not Sundin's deciding service.

Vad säger du? Det fanns ishockey matcher i helgen?

Oh right. Hockey.
Caps lost 7-1. Pens lost 7-3. Atlanta won... Wait, what? Oh yeah, it was against Tampa. But since none of this ever happened, it really doesn't matter.

Saturday night reasons for painkillers

Caps - Flyers

  • Semin is injured. Again. My dad won't notice if I empty one of his vodka bottles, right?
  • It's the Flyers, so just hit as hard as you can.
  • Kozlov could score a hat trick. Please?
  • No more Varlamov. But Jose is back...
  • Flyers ended Caps' playoff trip. Though thanks to that, this happened... Anyway, I think 9-0 and hat tricks by Kozlov and Bäckström would be proper.
  • I'll be on way to Stockholm and therefor NHL could crash down and I wouldn't know about untill Monday. Jätte kul!

Other games

Tampa - Atlanta
  • I do realize winning ain't so easy, but since it's Crosby-less game you can focus on the game instead of worrying about your asses.
  • This game should end 0-6
Leafs - Pens
  • Penguins: Goals for Satan and Malkin
  • Leafs: Goal(s) for Antropov. Maybe a hat trick
  • Crosby hat trick: a goal, an assist and a "nut punch". Shame he didn't score...
  • Leafs will lose 3-5

Friday, 19 December 2008

Wins and losses

Let's start with the win: Caps beat Blues 4-2.
  • Kozlov: 2 goals
  • Semin: 0+1 and an injury
  • Varlamov: 2 NHL games, 2 wins
  • Backes: go drive golf cart

And then there was Pens 6 -Thrash 3... Not disappointed that Pens won, but Atlanta really needs some points... a lot of points.
  • Malkin 2+2
  • Satan scored
  • A lot of weird things
  • Two Pens beating one Thrash? Nice move Crosby, nice move...

"Things that get more media attention in Finland than NHL" list has a new member... Please welcome "Death on the field", aka the last moment of pigeon.

Thursday, 18 December 2008

Vi ska kämpa, vi ska ge, allt det vi har...

Sure you will. Losing to Czech 2-6 was all you were able to do... Seriously, 3 goals in about minute? Someone forgot to tell my beloved Tre Kronors that they in fact are not Finnish, so there is really no reason to suck. But hey, I'm not complaining.

(Picture from SVT, via HockeyExpressen)

Anyway, that's not the point here. The point is that Russia managed to win 4-1 (0-1, 1-0, 3-0), even though Finns tried to kill the team. Well, at least Maxim Sushinsky. You know, it's not very nice to check someome into opponent's bench through half open door.
  • Vitaly Proshkin 1+1
  • Danis Zaripov 2+0
  • Morozoz 0+1
  • Radulov was robbed by Finnish goalie
  • So was Yashin

So... Russia won, Sweden lost and life is pretty good again.

Bäckström?

If that's Bäckström, it's damn good picture. If he's not Nicklas, Aftonbladet will suffer... But it still would be damn good picture.

With that picture and headline "Nicklas Bäckström about success in NHL and how does it feel to lead Swedish points - before (his) idol Henrik Zetterberg", one could expect to read an interview with Bäckström, right?

Well, there wasn't interview. With anybody. Just an article about Swedish players who don't get as much respect as they should (Bäckström isn't on that list). Oh and a list of the "hots" (hey, they actually mention Bäckström...) and the "cold" (Alfredsson).

Euro Hockey Tour

Finland - Russia

1-0, after first period.
Life sucks. Though Radulov made nice moves and almost scored shorthanded goal... Next time, just score. Please.

It's hockey time

Caps - Blues

  • Caps: 19-10-3, 41 points, 3rd in East
  • Blues: 12-15-3, 27 points, last in West
  • Caps: Semin, Ovechkin, Bäckström, Kozlov, Johnson...
  • Blues: ????
  • Caps: A lot of injuries
  • Blues: Golf cart accident, evil red carpet
  • Caps: Five Russians
  • Blues: Zero Russian
Caps will win 3-1

Euro Hockey Tour

Finland - Russia

  • Russia: Radulov, Yashin, Morozov, Zinoviev, Nikulin, Sushinsky
  • Finland: I should know, but I don't
  • Russia: Lot of skilled players
  • Finland: "We have to defense as a team" Zzzzz.....
  • Oh screw it, if they don't blow it up, Russia will win 5-1
If they don't win Bykov will be very, very angry...
You don't want that, right guys?

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow... Outdoor skating!

I know, it's not Christmas yet...

There is nothing like white Christmas. As long as the "white" indicates to white sand. Though, the snow that made me look like a snowman, will probably be melt before Ottawa lose another game...

Anyway, while having a nice little walk in the snowy city of mine I had time to think about winter and all the cool stuff you can do. Like skating outdoor. There is nothing like skating outdoor after sun has went/is going down (read, after 2 pm) and little snowflakes are coming down. I used to skate every winter at least few times, on the frozen field or on the frozen over sea. I miss that...

While we are talking about Christmas... here's my wishlist

  • no more injuries
  • Semin to score at least 50 more goals
  • Fedorov to win every single trophy NHL has
  • Sweden to lose to Italy in World Championships
  • HIFK to win at least one game... please?
  • Enrique Iglesias' new CD

Swedish ginger head with scary eyes vs Swedish bald head and some hockey stuff too

And the winner is... Peter Forsberg with stunning 64% of the votes. Unless Sundin signs with Montreal and Habs fans start to vote for him...
So, if Canucks were ready to pay Sundin something like 10 million a year, will they offer 15 to Forsberg? In case he manages to pull himself together...

Speaking of Forsberg, in his last game he apparently played with some kind of small box in his leg which stimulate electricity in to his leg... I'm not sure what Swedish journalists smoke, but I want that too.

Dad, what's that?
It's hockey game with Eastern Conference teams, my child.
Oooh.. Dad, what's Eastern Conference?

After two quiet day in hockey world, there will be some action tonight.

Caps will face the almighty Islanders in NY. I still haven't figured out (too lazy to google) what Hilary Duff has done, but I think she's the only reason why people might remember they exist.

Hockey-challenged Thrashers try to get some points when they play against shaving-challenged Sens in Ottawa.

Get your facts right or start blogging

Writing articles as your job is probably hard. You have to come up with ideas, what to write about and how to make the stories interesting. You have to do the research. And most importantly, you have to write the article and make sure that it's correct.

So I do realize that it's hard and human errors happen, with small details like years, days, correct numbers and that kind of stuff. But those who reads their news from news papers, news papers' websites or some organisation's website assume that they will get the right info about the things that matters. Like, in which team some player called Sergey Fedorov plays...

There are probably a lot of these, but here are the two I've noticed. First, NHL thinks that Matt Cooke plays in Philadelphia. If I were Cooke, I would sue NHL for libel. Then I read from HockeyExpressen (in Swedish) that "Ottawa got back two of their injured players - Mike Green and Sergey Fedorov". And I thought Nylander was the one who will be trated...

Rahman didn't get his game on

Totally not hockey related

Last night in Germany people expected to see IBF heavyweight match. Instead, they saw Wladimir Klitschko to have a Saturday evening practice with boxing sack called Rahman. I didn't see the whole match, but seriously, did Rahman have even one hit at Klitschko? I know, the Ukrainian killing machine hasn't lost in over 4 years, but I think it's little hard to win a boxing match if you don't try to hit your opponent...

Hey now you're an All Star get your game on, go play

CAPS 2 - HABS 1

  • Semin, Fedorov, Green and something like 10 other guys out? No problem, just call up some help from Bears. Two goalies out? No problem, just get one from Bears.
  • First NHL game, against Montréal, solid performance and two points... I think someone has already got his Christmas present.
  • Bäckström and Nylander scored; Semin, Ovechkin, Giroux and Kozlov each had 0+1
  • I nearly got a heart attack when I saw this headline: Bäckström skadad (Bäckström hurt)
  • Fedorov had better left the game early bacause he wanted to celebrate his birthday and not bacause of injury.
  • If I hear Don Cherry use words "good Canadian kid" one more time, I'll throw up. The red suit was nice though.

Swedish hockey fans in action - this time, no dildos

Swedish Elite League (Elitserien) game between Linköping and Rögle was delayed because of Linköping fans who decided to set off 3 pyrotechnic bombs before the game was supposed to start. Police cought 8 person and threw them out.

The game finally started about 30 minutes late and the first period went peacefully. But before the first intermission was over a young man had a sort of fight with police. The second period started as planned but everyone's attention was in the LHC section (I think it's the part of arena where the Linköping fans were) because of the threatening atmosphere between huligans and policemen.

I would write more about this but the articles are in Swedish and that's all I can translate from them.

Apparently the game ended 5-5

Web editors rulez

SENS 1 - CAPS 5

  • Is it count if you beat Ottawa?
  • Fedorov is back, 0+3
  • Bäckström had also 3 assists
  • Semin scored
  • 100th career point for Bradley
  • Ruutu had only one penalty
  • Some dude called Winchester ruined Johnson's shut-out

BRUINS 7 - THRASHERS 3

  • 3 goals is good... unless your opponent scores 7
  • Kovalchuk had somekind of brain malfunction: he actually scored and didn't take penalties
  • Chara scored
  • Waddel may not be the best GM in the league, but even he should figure out that they need a goalie who doesn't suck

RANGERS 5 - DEVILS 8

  • I don't like either of those teams, but Lundqvist allowing 8 goals is hilarious

Thursday, 11 December 2008

Miracle on ice 2: None of Caps were injured

BRUINS 1 - BEARS 3

  • Yes, I know that's polar bear, not bear. From now on, it's Hershey Polar Bears.
  • Semin is back
  • No one got hurt
  • Capitals should only draft players named Alexandr/Alexander
  • I really can't hate any team with Chara

RANGERS 3 -THRASHERS 2 (OT)

  • Hey, at least they got a point. It's progress, right?
  • Lundqvist had benched himself
  • Kovalchuk prefered to spend his time in the box... Making his "Teams I'd like to sign with" list?
  • I still hate Rangers

PENS 1 - DEVILS 4

  • Cookie time delayed until someone starts scoring again

BLUES 2 - DUCKS 4

  • Finnish (power play) Flash 0+2
  • Maybe the best name in NHL: Colaiacovo
  • The man with the Moustache scored

Wednesday, 10 December 2008

The most skilled player in NHL?

Apparently, according to a Finnish poll, it's Ovechkin. Not a shock, right? But what's shocking is this:
  • Ovechkin 27,2 %
  • Kovalchuk 3,3 %
  • Crosby 15,4%
  • Mikko Koivu 12,4%
  • Semin 5,6 %
  • Lecavalier 0,7 %
  • Kovalev 2,2 %
  • Selänne 9,9 %
  • Iginla 0,9 %
  • Malkin 14,6 %
  • Heatley 1,2 %
  • Weber 0,5 %
  • Zetterberg 1,0 %
  • Vanek 0,4 %
  • Kane 1,4 %
  • Getzlaf 2,4 %
  • Kessel 0,9 %
Koivu is a good player, but that good? Really??

Kovalchuk with 3,3 % of the votes and no love for Satan? I'm crushed and stunned. Though Finns suck at everything that includes voting, so why should this be an exception?

Unnecessary to say, the votes of anyone who is not Russian or called Selänne should be removed to Semin... Or all the votes to Fedorov. I don't really care which one, just make one of those happen.

The Return of the King

Kinda. Almost. Maybe.

Or then not. Anyway, from reliable Swedish sources, Sundin will cut his list to four teams during next week and will make his decision between 15th and 23rd December. His list includes teams from both Eastern and Western conference.

He will also meet people from the Rangers and do something for his poker project. I think. My Swedish teacher is crying... Moving on. He will also meet all the Swedes in Big Apple. And in case there are Swedish on Islanders, sorry guys but you are not invated.

And if you are interested in seeing his glorious bald head he is likely to be in Madison Square Garden on Saturday to watch Rangers vs Hurricanes. And after wasted over two hours of his life (in luxurious suit, though) by watching Rangers to get their ass kicked by Canes, he will cut them out of his list.

Bye bye Johnny, Good bye Johnny B. Goode

In Russia, booze drinks you

Former NHL goalie John Grahame can gather his things together and fly back to good ol' America where good old boys are drinkin' whiskey and rye.

Grahame was shockingly released from his duty as Avangard Omsk's netminder after the team had drawn the conclusion that he suffers from alcoholism. Last week, Grahame spent a night in detoxification center and according to Sport Expressen he has been seen drunk more often lately. Alcoholism? Sounds more like typical night in Finland to me...

Breaking News!!! Sundin will sign with LA Galaxy

Former Leafs captain Mats Sundin is in Los Angeles and spotted training with another Swedish athlete, Fredrik Ljungberg. Freddie is football (soccer) star and Calvin Klein model, who is also taking a break from his career but is now on his way to MLS (Major League Soccer). Oddly enough they were planning to play American football... Maybe Sundin will sign with San Francisco 49ers?

Sunday, 7 December 2008

Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do....

Former Bruins' player (for dazzling 10 games) and vital part of team Russia, Sergei Zinoviev leaves Siberia and Kazan Ak-Bars after long standing conflicts with coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov. He is free to go whatever club he wants to and Kazan will get nothing.

Like so many player in KHL, Zinoviev has questionable history (he has been released from team Russia after testing positive for marijuana). Unlike most of those players, he is not washed-up North American or European whose career is going down faster than local stock market. Well, at least he wasn't.

Saturday night fever - Sunday morning headache

PENS 2 - ITALIAN ICE COFFEE 3

That was... well, that sucked. If someone not Penguin had to score a hat trick, I would've preferred it wasn't Spezza. I'm just thankful Alfredsson didn't score. That would have been too cruel.

BEARS 2
- LEAFS

Congratulation Caps, your defense is scoring, Ovechkin is killing people and half of the team is still on medical leave.
Dear Santa, can you please heal Le Lapin et Le Grand-père?

добрый вечер. Buonasera. Good evening. God kväll.

Okey, so I never intended to start blogging. Actually I never intended to start following blogs... and here we are. Every evening after work I run into my room to my precious laptop and read all the hockey related blogs I know (no, I do not have life).

And why I started to blog now? Well, because it's midnight, I'm bored and I just watched Spezza to score hat trick and I'm kinda pissed off. That's why. I like to write when I'm pissed off. It's like therapeutic or something... And since I don't wanna be sent to anger management course by NHL, I thought it would be better to write here and not to send e-mails to NHL office.

What else everyone unlucky enough to read this need to know? I love hockey, so this blog will mostly deal with hockey. I do not like team Sweden, so this blog will include Sundin bashing. I'm not from North America, Great-Britain or any other English speaking area, so my English suck. Bear with me. Or don't. I believe that if my former English teacher read this, he would totally kill me... then revive me and kill me again. And again. But that wasn't the point here... Oh yeah, things everyone should know. Well, I think I already told all the important stuff. So have a nice evening:)
